Steamboat, CO | Skiing while 2

The four of us hopped on a plane six months ago and met Jeff’s family in Steamboat, CO for a week of thick white snow and intimate time under one roof. It was a beautiful week of skiing, tubing and catching up with some of our favorites. I wasn’t going to share this trip here because there really wasn’t a lot of content around this vacation but I recently stumbled upon these photo’s and felt a heavy weight come over me; we’d grown, all four of us, in such a short amount of time.

A few things have happened since returning from this trip, in fact the first quarter of this year looked a bit different. Jeff left his job at Portland Golf Club in January so you can imagine the weight that was on our family. Good news is he started a new career in the cardboard business just a short few month after. Our family lost our favorite long time nanny of two years in May as she was pregnant with her beautiful baby girl that was due the following month. Because of that, Macie and Marlowe started full-time daycare, aka “skool” at a Spanish Immersion facility which happened to be the biggest and best transition of all because poof, our toddlers became young girls just like that. This fascinating passage into growth and progress, confidence and communication. To say the least It’s been an incredible journey witnessing them pick up Spanish, rehearse songs for us we’d never heard and quite literally potty train themselves overnight.

Pictures. Because change is constant.

The plant phenomenon

I’m excited about this post because it’s something close to my heart (and most everyone else’s). You’ve probably noticed the surge of indoor jungle vibes in every indoor space via social media, Pinterest, favorite blogs, magazines, local boutiques, store fronts… IKEA!  Perhaps you haven’t even noticed the shift, but wondered why you’ve drifted into more plant shops recently or walked out of Home Depot without nails and a cart full of green? I’ve even noticed a shift in my coffee purchases; if there isn’t a plant shop to stumble into nearby, you can bet my beverage I won’t purchasing from you.  Ah!?

There’s no denying that they instantly brighten and liven any space, but what’s important are the benefits. Plants really should be considered a necessity rather than an object of décor, because honestly, good health should never be out of style.

If you’re not convinced, here are some of the amazing benefits that go beyond the eye:

  • They give an assist in breathing
  • They help deter illness
  • They clean the air
  • They boost healing
  • They help you work better… YES. Several studies with both students and workers reveals that studying or working in the presence of plants can have a pretty dramatic effect.

One last note. If you’re traveling to London check out a new Airbnb by the Pantone colour of the year. You get to spend your nights surrounded in a calm and plant-filled home. Rainforest bathroom included, need I say more?  Read more about it, HERE. Get more information on Pantone’s color of the year in a previous post, HERE.

Travel

Turks & Caicos | Traveling with 2 years olds

This is it you guys, I’ve made it through another design. Seven whole weeks of design heavy, fast pace ideation and presentation, free-mind sucking weeks… leaving me with very little time to do anything else. But, it’s the piece I love most about my day job by far, which can sometimes leave me with more to desire when it’s all wrapped up. In saying that, this is the space that allows me to still be creative, collaborate and speak to an audience about my point of view. Or in this moment right here right now, the first post since my design season started…. sharing my families travel to Turks.

I’m often approached with the same question from fellow moms, “any advice for staying a sane parent while traveling with toddlers… on very long flights”. Because this is what we do, we go to places on the other side of the world with our twin toddlers, once a year, because we like to test our patience, and theirs. Can you hear my humor?  Here are the four pieces of advice I can safely give without dictating anyone’s travel experience, with #1 being the utmost important.

Take your own advice and just… roll with the crapshoot. We all stress while preparing for trips, right?  We must pack ALL THE THINGS! We must make all kinds of extra purchases because they will save us from… IT ALL. But then we end up wound like a coiled spring, ready to lose our minds at the first flex of a child’s discomfort or boredom. Take your own advice and just… roll with the crapshoot. Traveling to new places with your children to see the world and break them of their routine provides a host of teachable moments that you couldn’t possibly have predicted or prepared for in advance. And most importantly it teaches them how important they are to you.

Get a portable DVD player or tablet. We are mindful about our children’s time with electronics; travel-time is not one of them. In saying that, there are some amazing apps out there that make you feel proud… all while distracting them for hours. One of our favorites is Endless Alphabet. It teaches children the ABC’s with interactive puzzle pieces. Both of my girls have learned the shapes, sounds and word-building from letters in this application.

Bring longer lasting foods. I spend a lot of time curating a balanced snack-bag for our family to eat during travel. Because, not only do I appreciate the power of a good bribe, I’m also very aware of the effects of trying to contain my child in a seat once she’s eaten an excessive amount of sugar. A box of raisins or cranberries is great because it contains natural sugars, and for a good bribe I pack YumEarth Organic Lollipops for them to suck on for a lengthy time. Another great option is Justin’s peanut butter brand has a pretzel stick and peanut butter snack pack that my girls are really into… otherwise known as DYI toddler food.

“Watch out for the airplane Police”! I think it’s safe to say that most parents struggle communicating rules to their toddlers. Children enjoy challenging mom and dad on occasion, and most of the time it’s when their bored… That’s why I recommend the “Airplane Police” trick. These “police” are looking out for badly behaved children as they are not allowed to fly. Okay, I am not suggesting you scare them, just gently warn them that there are procedures in place that we all must abide by. This has proved itself effective multiple times by stopping my toddler from climbing over seats, playing with the fold down table, kicking the seat in front and all the other things that passengers around you really love. Next time pull an attendant or two aside and ask them to pop by and explain these rules… The attendants are always more than pleased to do so.

I hope this helps someone in their next family adventure. Below are some pictures we took in Turks & Caicos, and at Beaches resort.

Color Coded

Pantone’s Color of the Year | Greenery

Monstera leaves wallpaper  |  Wall art  |  Duffel bag  |  Nail polish  |  Geode        Eco-Friendly water bottle  |  Chair  |  Modern planter  |  Cactus marquee light  |  Ottoman

Every year I gather a collection of product that represents a snapshot of what Pantone choses as their “color of the year” in our global culture. In a world of social, political and environmental disturbance, the Pantone Color plucked “greenery” as 2017’s color of the year, and I couldn’t be more delighted for this symbolic hue.

To me “greenery” goes much deeper then a fashion and home-design hue. It serves an expression, reminding us all how delicate this earth is.  It represents the great outdoors, reminds us to breathe more, and mostly calls attention to natural physical beauty within us all during a time when self doubt is so prevalent.

This color also symbolizes the health frenzy, eating clean, and MATCHA! Rethinking food waste and processing plants and buying eco-friendly cars, clothes and products. So this year I put together a collection of interior items that are either natural in element, displays the outdoors or has an eco element built into the item.

“Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”  – Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

Good things take time

I have been working my fingers to the bone on executing the first step of a (hopeful) lifetime project/dream of mine, something I’m super passionate about and have been dreaming of since shortly after the girls came into our lives. Every spare moment over the past 6-12 months has been dedicated to this ‘WrightforMichele’ transformation in order to have a clean platform and fresh online design presence for the second phase; the most important part of this project (which no-one will see for some time because I’m a mom, of twins, and work a full timer). So for now, please click and share or say hi as I share my stories and passions along the way.

I couldn’t have done any of this without Elena Watanabe, you’re my hero! She’s quite possibly one of the sweetest humans I know and has taught me so much. Some things I’d rather never knowing about in the web design and blog transfers world… Fun fact, when switching from Blogger to WordPress, photo’s may not transfer correctly. See, you only find these types of things out after you make that change, then google “why the hell are all of my photo’s missing?”. Which left me having to upload every single picture I’ve ever posted on WrightforMichele  All. Over. Again.

I’m celebrating with cheese and wine tonight with my very patient husband Jeff. Thank you for always being my rock, support system, believer, motivator and lover.

xoxo

M&M Turn TWO | The birthday Party

I promised myself last year that we’d have a quieter, more intimate birthday for these sweet 2-year-olds and that’s just what we did. Unlike last year, the girls had absolutely no interest in eating any of their cake, rather suck every drop of homemade frosting off every inch of the exterior. With a little help, they carefully unwrapped each gift and played with it before moving on to the next one.
You know, I think I already had my “my babies are two and I’m going to let my eyes get red about it for a second” moment while I was wrapping their presents. But last night, my last night of singing and giggling them to sleep as 23-month-olds, I was alright. It was the fastest they’d fallen asleep in a long time. So even though they’re two years older than on the day we first met, these moments haven’t changed at all. In fact Marlowe still enjoys me holding her like a baby, with her binky as I rock and sing to her. So to that i’m grateful.
There aren’t enough words in the world to express how much we love you two and how happy you make us every single day.

ABOUT THE BLOG

Wright for Michele is a Portland based lifestyle blog devoted to cultivating stylish, relatable and creative content. It also serves as a personal time capsule of my family’s journeys, giggling and stumbling a bit, through it all.

I started "Wright for Michele" back in 2010 as a creative outlet and to share the things I love (basically the exact same reason the rest of the internet started blogging). Often this blog is about family, sometimes it’s about style, and in general it’s about life and how you (and me) can make every single area in it, better. It’s simple, it’s real (sometimes a little raw and almost always full of grammatical errors), it’s honest and hopefully no matter what it’s a little sweet.
