Pantone’s Color of the Year | Greenery

Monstera leaves wallpaper  |  Wall art  |  Duffel bag  |  Nail polish  |  Geode        Eco-Friendly water bottle  |  Chair  |  Modern planter  |  Cactus marquee light  |  Ottoman

Every year I gather a collection of product that represents a snapshot of what Pantone choses as their “color of the year” in our global culture. In a world of social, political and environmental disturbance, the Pantone Color plucked “greenery” as 2017’s color of the year, and I couldn’t be more delighted for this symbolic hue.

To me “greenery” goes much deeper then a fashion and home-design hue. It serves an expression, reminding us all how delicate this earth is.  It represents the great outdoors, reminds us to breathe more, and mostly calls attention to natural physical beauty within us all during a time when self doubt is so prevalent.

This color also symbolizes the health frenzy, eating clean, and MATCHA! Rethinking food waste and processing plants and buying eco-friendly cars, clothes and products. So this year I put together a collection of interior items that are either natural in element, displays the outdoors or has an eco element built into the item.

“Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”  – Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

Not one, but two colors Pantone has given us to outfit our bodies, faces and furnishings in for 2016. At first glance, Rose Quartz and Serenity remind me of a baby shower, old family photo’s or my parents textured wallpaper in the 80’s. But then I started looking at how this could translate into modern home decor. Rose Quartz in a flat paint splashed on the walls in a bedroom would look amazing, and even more lovely when paired with black. And Serenity, here me out on this one, worn in a shirt as a texture, then a darker Serenity hue in a jacket and matching pant. It’s like a dressier take on head-to-toe denim. Am I right?

Indigo.  It’s everywhere and it’s not just for your favorite pair of jeans anymore. It’s great because it works from head to toe. So layer it to create dimension within a classic hue.

A fellow twin mom and friend of mine recently posted a blurb on a forum I follow, “Parents of Multiples” that touched me. She wrote about the time she’d spent that morning and expressed her frustrations. That morning was extra special to her because for the first time in 21 months she’d been able to sit and enjoy the morning with just one of her twin boys because the other had slept in. They had breakfast together, read the books he wanted to read and played outside while she enjoyed her coffee. It had solidified the fears she had when she’d found out she was carrying twins; something I feared as well. The inability to fully focus on one child during the most precious time. She wrote about the happiness she felt in that moment with one, but then expressed the sadness that soon followed realizing what she’d feared was true. I hear you friend!
I have separation anxiety and often fear leaving them, even for a quick trip to the grocery store. I stare at each one of them for so long I’ve probably given them a complex. I never wish time away or look forward to tomorrow even at our worst. And I am so thankful for each moment to a fault, it’s often a distraction. Just know fellow multiples mommies and daddies… There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared for: twins.

I read a quote the other day that I’d never read before, it’s by the great Dr. Seuss of course. “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory”.
Last Saturday I was sitting with my girls in our living room while Jeff was away at work. Macie was unfolding all the laundry I’d just organized, Marlowe was screaming because her milkie’s weren’t heating up fast enough, they’d both just pooped and needed diaper changes and was about an hour past their nap time; which every parent knows is a the most sacred daily event known to mankind. I hadn’t showered in 48 hours and was covered with food and slobber. The pre-child Michele would have been traumatized by the future if given a glance into that moment. There’s no doubt that it’s the most exhausting, challenging and emotional time in my life but it’s also the greatest pleasure. It’s taught me patience, selflessness and most of all has allowed me to be the nurturing human I’d been yearning for. It has put life into a new perspective… Shit really doesn’t matter. No one cares if the house is messy or if I wore the same t-shirt and jeans the last 3 times you’ve seen me and I’m not hard on myself if I don’t post anything on here for 3 months. And, most of all life is as good as it can get if my family is happy and healthy.

So, cheers to you Dr. Seuss. And cheers to dressing up and getting a sitter for the night every once in awhile.

MARSALA PANTONE 18-1438
Being that it’s already March and I’m just addressing this years Pantone color of the year might be a giveaway that I’m underwhelmed by their choosing. 2012’s Pantone color was Tangerine Tango but it really should have been Oxblood (click here for a previous post). The market was flooded with this shade, almost to the point where it was the only hue you could buy an item in. It was 2012’s black. I do think this new earthy, elegant shade will translate well to fashion, beauty and interiors so it’ll be fun to see how it’s used this time around.
So of course I have put together a little collection of items for your peepers that suggests this colorway is on it’s way in. So far the hue is being played much deeper then the Pantone shade so I’m excited to see how it will be used as the seasons progress.

Well, where do I start?
…Merry Christmas!
…Happy New Year!?!
…I head back to work in 1 month! (Can you feel my pounding heart?)

Last year we were living in a tight space in NE Portland with our 2 dogs. I would have never guessed that within twelve months we’d double the size of our human family and be cozied up in a spacious MCM in NW. It was a good year to farewell. I’d re-live 2014 over and over again.

I remember crying over every growth spurt my girls had but have quickly realized that every step only gets better. Important milestones: I can finally get through “You Are My Sunshine” without crying. Around 2 months old they told me that they loved me, with their eyes. Open mouth kisses are the only kind of kisses. And Marlowe, she’s a couple weeks shy of losing the nick name “Bob Burns”. “Bob” for the exaggerated head bobbing that’s given almost every Marlowe snuggler a fat lip, and “Burns” for her impressive resemblance to Mr. Burns from the Simpsons.

This post is a jumpstart to getting back into my creative flow. I enjoy this space to keep connected to myself, the creative culture in Portland and to chronicle life’s important pieces and tid bits. I have found a goal to set for myself going into 2015 and I think it’s something important. Too often people forget that some of life’s greatest moments are the not-so-pretty ones. They’re not as fuzzy, or beautiful, or well… Perfect. Social media has allowed people to create fictional, unattainable lives that are rarely displayed in their natural light. I’m not planning on exposing myself to you all without makeup on (holy shit) or getting dark and depressing. But, to just be realistic.

Red, Blue and… Pink. So playful, confident and sophisticated when paired with variations of black, brown or white.
Color coded : Any three colors that are directly next to each other on the color wheel are considered analogous colors. Blue and red cuddle each other on the color wheel, then when mixed together you get magenta, it’s tertiary color baby. Wearing color shouldn’t intimidate. It’s about finding combinations that are flattering on you and being willing to experiment.
Unfortunately my look is missing a red hit. I should have written this post prior to the event I wore this to so I knew how to do it Wright!

Jeff and I are feeling super special after reading all of your sweet comments about our double dittle duo that’s on their way. I’m looking forward to showing an obvious tummy, right now it just looks like I have a serious case of front butt. Stretch pants are my best friend.

ABOUT THE BLOG

Wright for Michele is a Portland based lifestyle blog devoted to cultivating stylish, relatable and creative content. It also serves as a personal time capsule of my family’s journeys, giggling and stumbling a bit, through it all.

I started "Wright for Michele" back in 2010 as a creative outlet and to share the things I love (basically the exact same reason the rest of the internet started blogging). Often this blog is about family, sometimes it’s about style, and in general it’s about life and how you (and me) can make every single area in it, better. It’s simple, it’s real (sometimes a little raw and almost always full of grammatical errors), it’s honest and hopefully no matter what it’s a little sweet.
